Another former Obama official wants to censor online speech

Censorship Computer Handcuffs Freedom Internet

Today’s version of Hitler’s Brown Shirts all seem to belong to one political party, and it isn’t the one Donald J. Trump belongs to – it is the party of his predecessor.

At every turn for the past eight years, Democrats – be they elected or appointed or conscripted – have striven to limit free speech. During the Obama presidency, the White House waged war on the media, charging more journalists under the Espionage Act than any prior administration. Since then, the Marxist Left has drafted legions of “Antifa” thugs to beat Trump supporters into silence.

Now comes a former Obama-era official who is openly calling for the censorship of online speech, under the guise of combating “fake news.” (Related: Read The Top 10 Fake News Stories Of The Last Two Years That Were Relentlessly Pushed By The “Fakestream Media”.)

Former Federal Election Commission Chairwoman Ann M. Ravel said during a speech at the University of California-Berkeley, that political speech has to be controlled on social media, for the good of the country. This is doubly ironic: The former chairwoman of a government office charged with ensuring fair and free elections (to include upholding political speech) calling for limiting free speech on the site where the campus free speech movement began.

And here’s more proof that Leftists enjoy exercising their hypocrisy gene: Ravel was speaking at an event titled, “Future of Democracy.”

Seriously, you simply cannot make this stuff up.

Arguing, falsely, that the proliferation of “fake news” on social media sites like Facebook and Google had an out-sized effect on the most recent election – a claim that is impossible to research, let alone substantiate – Revel said a lack of proper disclosure from those who create such news is getting to be a major problem.

One wonders if she was talking about the Washington Post, CNN, The New York Times, or any one of the establishment broadcast networks, all of whom are the biggest purveyors of fake news in the country.

“We know that there’s a lot of campaigning that’s moved to the internet, whether it’s through fake news or just outright advertising and there is almost no regulation of this, very little,” she said, as reported by Heat Street. “And so that the disclosure that we expect as to who is behind campaigns is not going to exist soon.

“Some people are even predicting that by 2020 most of the advertising is going to move from television to the Internet, and I think this is a serious issue that requires a lot of discussion,” she added.

By “discussion,” what she really means is there needs to be more “discussion” of censoring political speech that she and other supporters of the Hate Party don’t care for.

Because what is political speech if it isn’t about lying to the public? Look at the promises Obama and Democrats made regarding Obamacare? None of it turned out to be true. And what about Republicans who campaigned on the pledge to repeal and replace Obamacare? Turns out they weren’t being honest, either.

The point is, the very first Amendment to the Constitution recognizes and guarantees two basic human rights: The right to speak freely and the right express oneself freely. Period.

There are no caveats to that, as Leftists like Revel believe. The First Amendment doesn’t say, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances under these conditions…

Revel and other Leftists are using the phony “fake news” narrative as a way to limit what non-establishment media report. There is no other reason for this push. How do we know? Because during Revel’s tenure, she pushed to have right-leaning websites like The Drudge Report regulated, then blamed opposition to her censorship attempt on “misogyny.” And in 2015, Democrats tried but failed to expand her agency’s regulatory reach to include posts on social media and other forms of Internet speech.

The Alt-Left doesn’t want to discuss ideals. It doesn’t want to debate. It doesn’t want there to be any disagreement at all – only mindless, uncontested conformity imposed on all by an overarching centralized authority.

You know, like China.
