The European Union has pressured X owner Elon Musk to cancel his interview with former U.S. President Donald Trump to no avail.
EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton was the Brussels official responsible for the effort, doing so through an Aug. 12 letter addressed to Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino. The interview set to take place on X Spaces has drawn significant attention given the recent developments in the United Kingdom. Breton and other EU officials have expressed concern over the potential of “harmful content” being amplified through the interview.
“You have the legal obligation to ensure X’s compliance with EU law, and in particular the DSA [Digital Services Act], in the [continent],” Breton wrote. He warned that the “amplification of harmful content … might increase the risk profile of X and generate detrimental effects on civic discourse and public security. This is important against the background of recent examples of public unrest … [e.g] the recent riots in the United Kingdom.”
“As the relevant content is accessible to EU users and being amplified also in our jurisdiction, we cannot exclude potential spillovers. I therefore urge you to promptly ensure the effectiveness of your systems and to report measures taken to my team.”
Breton ultimately warned that he and his office “will be extremely vigilant to any evidence that points to breaches of the DSA,” and “will not hesitate to make full use of [its] toolbox … should it be warranted to protect EU citizens from serious harm.” (Related: ‘Illegal secret deal:’ Musk claims European Union tried to blackmail X into censorship.)
The official himself took to X to announce the letter, noting that “with great audience comes greater responsibility.” He continued: “As there is a risk of amplification of potentially harmful content in [the EU] in connection with events with major audiences around the world, I sent this letter to [Musk].”
According to YourNews, Breton’s Aug. 12 correspondence has raised “significant concerns about free speech and political interference.” Some have described it as an attempt to suppress free speech and prevent the former president from sharing his views with a global audience.
“The EU is threatening [Musk] because they don’t want the world to hear the truth from [former] President Trump,” said one pundit on social media. “The EU celebrates open borders, sexual grooming in schools, climate tyranny and shutting down free speech. Trump is their greatest threat, and they want him gone.”
Musk and Yaccarino took to social media to respond. “This is an unprecedented attempt to stretch a law intended to apply to Europe to political activities in the U.S.,” Yaccarino wrote. She also decried the letter for insinuating that Europeans “are incapable of listening to a conversation and drawing their own conclusions.”
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who obtained the social media platform in October 2022, responded with a meme from the 2008 film “Tropic Thunder.” He sarcastically added: “To be honest, I really wanted to respond with this … meme, but I would never do something so rude and irresponsible.”
Despite this threat from Breton, the two-hour interview between Musk and Trump pushed through on Aug. 12. However, it was delayed for 45 minutes following what the X owner described as a distributed denial of service attack on the platform’s servers.
During the interview, Trump described incumbent U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out as a “coup.” He also blasted Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, for her weak stance on border security. According to the real estate mogul, the former California attorney general had overseen “millions of crossings” by illegals during her time as the second most powerful person in the world.
