In a chilling prediction that has sent shockwaves through the online community, popular streamer Asmongold has warned that the rampant violent threats on Reddit could serve as the catalyst for a government-mandated Internet Real ID system. This system, he argues, would strip away online anonymity, allowing globalist entities to surveil and control individuals’ digital lives. The threats, which have surged since Donald Trump’s presidency, have escalated to alarming levels, with users openly calling for violence against political figures and conservatives. Asmongold’s dire warning comes as Reddit temporarily banned multiple pages last month after users posted explicit threats against staff at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The streamer’s comments highlight a growing concern: the far-left’s embrace of violent rhetoric may inadvertently hand the government the justification it needs to impose a Real ID system, mirroring authoritarian regimes like China. Asmongold’s analysis reveals a troubling irony: those who once championed censorship of conservative voices are now facing the consequences of their own radicalism.
Asmongold, whose real name is Zack, did not mince words when describing the state of Reddit. “You have people that are upvoting and glorifying political violence all over this website, and it’s completely become a radical terrorist breeding ground,” he said. “It’s actually insane how bad this is.”
The platform, long known for its far-left leanings, has seen a dramatic increase in violent rhetoric since the rise of Donald Trump. Users have openly called for the assassination of Trump, his administration, and conservatives, with posts like “Time to hunt” and “Let’s drag their necks up by a large coil up rope” gaining traction. These threats, Asmongold argues, are not isolated incidents but part of a broader trend that could have dire consequences for online freedom.
The streamer pointed to the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as a turning point. Luigi Mangione, the shooter, has since become an icon for many on the extreme left, further emboldening violent rhetoric. “If there are more terror attacks of a similar nature,” Asmongold warned, “we’re absolutely gonna get Real ID on the Internet.”
Asmongold highlighted the hypocrisy of far-leftists who once lobbied for mass censorship of conservative voices but are now crying foul when the same tactics are used against them. “Reddit is a very censorial website,” he said. “They constantly ban people for things that are wrongthink. Now these people are on the receiving end of it, and they’re crying about free speech. But they were never crying about free speech when people they disagreed with were getting banned.”
This double standard, he argued, reveals a deeper issue: the far-left’s willingness to weaponize censorship against their opponents while ignoring the dangers it poses to their own freedoms. “These people think they’re rebel heroes,” Asmongold said, “but the only people they’re going to be heroes for is the government because the deep state government people are going to be able to justify a Real ID on the Internet.”
Asmongold’s warning about Internet Real ID is not without precedent. In countries like China, internet use is tightly controlled, with users required to register with their government-issued ID. This system allows the state to monitor and censor online activity, revoking access at will. Asmongold fears that the U.S. is heading down a similar path, with violent rhetoric on platforms like Reddit providing the perfect justification for such measures.
“It’s getting real bad,” he said. “These people are speedrunning Internet Real ID. I just hope that they understand that.”
The streamer called for a balanced approach to moderation, one that adheres to the First Amendment while banning illegal activity like incitement to violence or doxxing. “You just follow the law and you ban people based off of things they say that break the law,” he said.
Asmongold’s warning serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of online freedom. The violent rhetoric on Reddit, once dismissed as mere hyperbole, now threatens to usher in a new era of digital surveillance and control. The irony is palpable: those who once championed censorship are now unwittingly paving the way for a system that could strip away their own freedoms.
